TROY WRIGHT BE APPOINTED AS THE WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS DIVISION SUPERINTENDENT? EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 1ST, 2025.

I FURTHER MOVE THE PROPOSED SUPERINTENDENT'S CONTRACT BE APPROVED AS PRESENTED.

IS THERE A SECOND? SECOND? ANY DISCUSSION ON THAT? BOARD COMMENTS? I'D LIKE TO JUST SAY, UM, WE, WE HAD A VERY GOOD COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO HIRE DR. WRIGHT.

UM, THIS DECISION REPRESENTS FAR MORE THAN A SELECTION OF A NEW LEADER.

IT REPRESENTS HARD WORK, THOUGHTFUL DELIBERATION, A SHARED COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE OF OUR STUDENTS, OUR COMMUNITY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR FULL BOARD SUPPORT AND COLLABORATION.

UM, WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SPENDING MANY HOURS TOGETHER OVER MULTIPLE DAYS, AND, UM, WE CERTAINLY ASKED LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND, AND YOU TRULY ARE GOING TO BE THE BEST FOR THIS DIVISION.

THIS EVENING, I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO PRESENT A VERY SPECIAL DONATION FOR PORTABLE AD A ED MACHINES.

THEY'RE GONNA BE PLACING KEY LOCATIONS ACROSS THE DISTRICT HERE, ONE AT AS ROADS E WILSON MORRISON RESY JEFFRIES, AND AT THE SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE.

ROBINSON AND I ARE BOTH IN EMPLOYEES AT FOCKER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

WE WORK TOGETHER AT WG COLEMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THE PLAINS, VIRGINIA.

SO I CAN PERSONALLY ATTEST TO THE FACT THAT MS. ROBINSON IS A WELL-RESPECTED, VALUABLE MEMBER OF OUR SCHOOL.

SHE IS MORE THAN SIMPLY A MATH COACH.

YES, ANGIE SUPPORTS OUR MATH TEACHERS, BUT SHE ALSO TAKES THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW ALL OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY FROM OUR ITRT AND THE SRO TO THE I, TO THE IAS AND THE CUSTODIANS AND THE CAFETERIA STAFF AND SO ON.

ANGIE IS A MEMBER OF OUR SCHOOL THROUGH AND THROUGH HAD SALAN CARRIED OUT HER PLAN.

IT IS MOST IMPORTANTLY THE STUDENTS THAT WOULD'VE SUFFERED FROM THE LOSS.

I'VE WITNESSED THE CONNECTIONS THAT MS. ROBINSON MAKES WITH OUR STUDENTS, AND NOT JUST THE ONES THAT STRUGGLE WITH MATH.

IT IS THE STUDENTS THAT OTHERWISE STRUGGLE TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS THAT HAVE COME TO LOVE MS. ROBINSON.

IN ADDITION, ANGIE HAS PERSONALLY HELPED ME WITH MATH CONCERNS FOR OUR OWN THREE CHILDREN, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE NOT ON HER CASELOAD.

IT IS HER PASSION FOR TEACHING AND CARING ABOUT THE LEARNING OF ALL CHILDREN THAT ANGIE ROBINSON GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND.

I AM A WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL'S ALUMNI WHO IS HONORED TO TEACH IN THE COMMUNITY I GREW UP IN.

I AM FREQUENTLY AT WORK UNTIL 6:00 PM TO ENSURE THAT MY STUDENTS HAVE HIGH QUALITY EDUCATIONS, DESPITE THERE BEING NO FUNDING FOR TEXTBOOKS OR RESOURCES FROM THE COUNTY IN OVER A DECADE.

LAST YEAR, A CERTAIN MEMBER OF THE BOARD ENCOURAGE PUBLIC HARASSMENT OF ME AND MY COWORKER.

SHE ATTEMPTED TO HAVE OUR NAMES BE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE COMPLETELY OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL PROTOCOL.

ONE CAN ONLY ASSUME IT WAS SO THAT SHE COULD HARASS US OPENLY AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO ATTACK US.

MY COWORKER AND I DREADED EVERY DAY, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THIS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT MY COWORKER DIRECTLY.

WE FELT AFRAID TO GO TO WORK DESPITE AN OUTPOURING SUPPORT FROM SO MANY OF THE TEACHERS IN THIS COMMUNITY, MY UNION AND OUR ADMIN TEAM.

WE FELT SMALL AND POWERLESS AS TEACHER AT AS TEACHERS AT WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

WE COULDN'T DO MUCH FOR OURSELVES.

BUT NOW THE SAME SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER HAS ATTEMPTED TO ATTACK A TEACHER OUTSIDE OF DISTRICT.

SHE OVERSEE TO THAT BOARD MEMBER.

I KNOW THAT ONCE EVERYONE HAS FINISHED SPEAKING, YOU WILL ACT AS THOUGH YOU'RE BEING UNFAIRLY PER PERSECUTED.

YOU'LL CLAIM THAT THIS WAS AN ACTION OF A RESPONSIBLE PUBLIC SERVANT.

WHAT I NEED FOR YOU TO KNOW IS WHAT YOU DID WAS WRONG.

WOULD YOU HAVE HAD THAT SCHOOL SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER'S NUMBER IF YOU WERE NOT ON THE WARREN COUNTY BOARD? YOU WERE.

YOU SAID YOURSELF THAT YOU'VE MET THEM THROUGH YOUR WORK AS AN ELECTED OFFICIAL.

YES, SHE HAS SAID SOME PRETTY AWFUL THINGS ABOUT SOME OF YOU AND IMPLIED THINGS, BUT THIS WAS AN ATTACK OUTSIDE OF HER ROLE.

THE ATTACK ON ANGIE ROBINSON WAS UNCALLED FOR AND UNFORTUNATELY CONTINUES TO SHOW A PATTERN OF BEHAVIOR BY MS. SELLS THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE BY AN ELECTED MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD.

AS A RESULT OF THIS UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR, WHICH BRINGS AN UNFAVORABLE LIGHT ON THIS SCHOOL BOARD AND OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY, I CALL ON OUR NORTH RIVER REPRESENTATIVE TO THE WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD.

WHEN PEOPLE COME INTO YOUR LIFE, IT IS EITHER A BLESSING OR A LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

WELL, I'M HERE TO TELL YOU, THE WARREN COUNTY SCHOOL DIVISION HAS DELIVERED TO ME A BLESSING AND MULTIPLE LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

YOU'LL NEVER FIND A MORE COMMITTED AND MORE PASSIONATE GROUP OF PEOPLE WITH ONLY ONE THING ON THEIR MIND.

DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE A CHILD SUCCESSFUL.

REGARDLESS OF ECONOMICS OR BACKGROUND.

EACH OF THEM HAS A HEART FOR STUDENTS.

EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO OTHER ADVOCATE PRESENT, I HAVE LEARNED FROM THEM.

LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, ARE THE PARENTS I FOUND THROUGHOUT MY CAREER.

EVERY PARENT WANTS TO FEEL CONFIDENT THAT WHEN THEY SEND THEIR CHILD TO SCHOOL, THEY WILL BE SAFE.

AND WE AS EDUCATORS WILL STAND IN THEIR PLACE.

I HAVE FOUND THE PARENTS THAT I HAVE INTERACTED WITH JUST SIMPLY WANT TO BE HEARD.

THEY REALLY WANT TO BE HEARD ABOUT WHATEVER THE ISSUE IS.

PARENTS OF WARREN COUNTY EXPECT THE SUPERINTENDENT TO BE A REAL HUMAN BEING AND NOT A FIGUREHEAD.

THEY ALSO EXPECT YOU TO COMMUNICATE IN A TIMELY MANNER WHEN THERE MIGHT BE AN ISSUE FOR THEIR CHILD.

THE WARREN COUNTY COMMUNITY IS ONE IN WHICH EVERYONE KNOWS THAT WE IN THE SCHOOL DIVISION ARE PREPARING STUDENTS FOR A FUTURE WE WILL NEVER SEE.

IT IS AN INVESTMENT THAT WE WILL YIELD TREMENDOUS DIVIDENDS.

I HAVE FOUND THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TO BE GREAT LEADERS IN BALANCING THE COMPETING NEEDS OF EACH DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING THE SCHOOL DIVISION.

I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO PRESENT COMPELLING NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL DIVISION AND TO HAVE THEM FUNDED OUTSIDE OF THE CURRENT BUDGET.

I HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO COLLABORATE WITH THEM AS I HAVE FOUND THEM TO BE TRUE PARTNERS.

SO I NOW WANT TO IMPART A FEW ELEMENTS OF WISDOM.

WHEN YOU GET STRESSED DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, TAKE HALF AN HOUR AND GO TO A KINDERGARTEN CLASS.

THEY WILL ALWAYS MAKE YOU GET INVOLVED IN THEIR WORLD AND MELT YOUR TROUBLES AWAY.

IF THAT ISN'T CONVENIENT, HAVE LUNCH WITH AN ELEMENTARY CLASS AND ASK THE QUESTION, WHAT DID YOU DO IN THE CLASSROOM THIS MORNING? AND IN, IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO DO ANY OF THESE THINGS, JUST WALK THE HALLS OF ANY SCHOOL AND WATCH THE MAGIC AND SCIENCE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM.

IT IS MAGIC TO OBSERVE A TEACHER TURN ON THE LEARNING LIKE WITH A STUDENT.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, IF YOU JUST NEED TO TALK, CALL ME.

I STAND READY TO ASSIST YOU ANY WAY POSSIBLE TO MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR NEW ROLE.

THIS COMMUNITY OF WARREN COUNTY IS A VERY, VERY SPECIAL PLACE AND DESERVES EXCELLENCE FOR ITS CHILDREN.

UM, I WANNA TAKE JUST A MOMENT TO BRIEFLY ADDRESS THE CONCERNS THAT WERE RAISED BY MRS. ROBINSON'S LETTER TO THE ROYAL EXAMINER, WHICH IS JUST TO SAY THAT THE COMMENTS IN MRS. ALAN'S TEXT MESSAGE WERE NOT AUTHORIZED BY ME OR THIS BOARD AND DO NOT REPRESENT WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

UM, NOW THIS INCIDENT MS. HIGHLIGHTED SOMETHING THAT I CONSIDER TO BE A PROBLEM FOR US FOR THIS BOARD, WHICH IS NAMELY THAT WE DON'T HAVE A FORMAL CODE OF ETHICS.

UM, I DON'T THINK THAT WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO RELY ON ASSUMED NORMS OF BEHAVIOR.

I THINK THAT WE SHOULD HAVE, UM, GUIDELINES OF WHAT IS EXPECTED FOR OURSELVES, FOR OUR BOARD MEMBERS IN TERMS OF PROFESSIONALISM.

UM, AND THAT THAT SHOULD BE WRITTEN OUT AS A CODE OF ETHICS.

UM, I THINK THAT WILL HELP CLARIFY EXPECTATIONS AND STRENGTHEN PUBLIC TRUST IF WE'RE ABLE TO PASS THAT.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE US TO THINK ABOUT, UM, THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE VIRGINIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION.

UM, SINCE LEAVING, WE HAVE LOST ACCESS TO VALUABLE TRAINING, PEER SUPPORT FROM OTHER BOARD MEMBERS ACROSS THE STATE.

PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE AND ETHICS RESOURCES THAT MOST SCHOOL BOARDS IN VIRGINIA RELY ON OF THE ROUGHLY 130 SCHOOL DIVISIONS IN THE STATE, ONLY SEVEN, INCLUDING US, ARE NOT CURRENTLY VSBA MEMBERS.

THIS ISOLATION HAS CONTRIBUTED TO OUR CURRENT DYSFUNCTION.

IN MY OPINION, I THINK THAT REJOINING THE VSBA WOULD BE AN IMPORTANT STEP TOWARDS RESTORING PROFESSIONALISM AND NORMALCY TO OUR BOARD.

UM, THIS BOARD USED TO ANNUALLY AFFIRM A CODE OF ETHICS THAT WAS RECOMMENDED FROM THE VSBA.

UM, A FEW YEARS BACK, ONE OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS DECLINED TO SIGN THAT AND EVENTUALLY THE BOARD JUST LET IT DROP, MYSELF INCLUDED.

AND I REGRET THAT.

UM, AND I THINK YOU KNOW THAT WE SHOULD CORRECT THAT.

NOT LONG AFTER THAT, WE LEFT THE VSBA, UM, AND WE SINCE THEN HAVE NOT BEEN BENEFITING FROM THE PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE AND TRAINING.

UM, AND WHEN I WAS ELECTED, WHEN I WAS FIRST ELECTED, I ATTENDED THE VSBA CONFERENCE THAT NOVEMBER BEFORE I EVEN, UM, SAT ON THIS BOARD.

THEY ALSO HAVE NEW MEMBER TRAININGS IN JANUARY.

AND I WOULD LOVE FOR OUR NEW MEMBERS TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND THOSE TRAININGS, WHICH WE WOULD NEED TO REJOIN THE BSBA IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT.

AND I WOULD RECOMMEND ALL OF THE BOARD MEMBERS ATTEND BSBA TRAINING 'CAUSE I FOUND 'EM TO BE VERY HOPEFUL.

UM, SO TODAY I AM RECOMMENDING THAT WE CENTER MRS. SALANS, CLARIFYING THAT HER STATEMENTS DO NOT REPRESENT THIS BOARD.

THAT WE ADOPT A FORMAL CODE OF ETHICS FOR ALL BOARD MEMBERS, AND THAT WE REJOIN THE VSBA.

IN MY OPINION, THESE STEPS WILL HELP HEAL ANY HARM THAT MAY HAVE BEEN DONE TO OUR BOARD'S CREDIBILITY AND MOVE US ALL BACK TOWARDS CIVIL RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP.

ULTIMATELY, TRUE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS REP RESTS WITH THE VOTERS, WHICH IS TO SAY ALL OF YOU.

UM, WE HAVE ALL BEEN PARTICIPATING IN OUR BUDGET MEETINGS WHERE WE'VE BEEN REVIEWING THE FINANCIAL DETAILS AND IDENTIFYING THE PRESSING NEEDS FOR OUR UH, SCHOOLS.

AND LASTLY, I ATTENDED THE CAC MEETING ON OCTOBER 27TH, WHICH IS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.

I CAN CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE OUR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO BE INVOLVED AND SHARE THEIR VOICES AT THESE MEETINGS.

OUR CONSTITUENTS HAVE VOICED THAT THEY EXPECT ME AND WE AS ELECTED OFFICIALS TO ACT WITH INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY, AND THAT ANY BEHAVIOR FALLING SHORT OF THESE STANDARDS UNDERMINES OUR ROLES AS PUBLIC SERVANTS.

TONIGHT, I'D LIKE TO SPEAK A LITTLE BIT TO THAT.

AS ELECTED OFFICIALS, IT IS OUR DUTY TO SERVE WITH INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY, NOT TO WEAPONIZE OR ENHANCE ANY FALSE NARRATIVE.

WHEN THIS IS DONE, IT PRESENTS A BREACH OF PUBLIC TRUST IN A VIOLATION OF THE CONFIDENCE THAT OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR CONSTITUENTS HAVE PLACED IN US.

NO MEMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY SHOULD EVER HAVE THEIR THOUGHTS, REPUTATION, LIVELIHOOD, OR MENTAL HEALTH THREATENED DUE TO A DIFFERENCE IN OPINION, AND PARTICULARLY NOT FROM THOSE IN A POSITION OF AUTHORITY.

ANY BEHAVIOR AS SUCH ERODES THE PUBLIC TRUST.

AND LET ME BE VERY CLEAR, MY COMMENTS ARE AN ACT OF DUE DILIGENCE UNDERTAKEN IN RESPONSE TO THE OUTCRY OF THE CONSTITUENTS THAT I SERVE AND THAT I'VE HEARD FROM OUR EDUCATORS AND OUR COMMUNITY.

I BELIEVE IF CONDUCT OF AN ELECTED OFFICIAL FALLS SHORT OF INTEGRITY STANDARDS EXPECTED BY THE BOARD, AGAIN, IT UNDERMINES OUR PUBLIC CONFIDENCE AND IT DOESN'T REPRESENT THE PROFESSIONALISM WE OWE AS ELECTED OFFICIALS SERVING OUR SCHOOLS.

AND THIS IS WHY I'M SPEAKING AS A GUARDIAN OF THE PUBLIC TRUST PLACED IN ME AND IN THE BELIEF THAT OUR STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY DESERVE NOTHING LESS THAN INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY BECAUSE, AGAIN, I'VE SAID IT A HUNDRED TIMES AND I WILL SAY IT A HUNDRED TIMES MORE, OUR STUDENTS DESERVE NOTHING LESS.

WE HAVE A DUTY TO RESPOND WHEN THAT INTEGRITY IS VIOLATED.

IF WE LOOK THE OTHER WAY, IT MAKES US COMPLICIT TONIGHT.

ALSO, AS I SAID EARLIER, MARKS A VERY PIVOTAL POINT, UM, AND MOMENT FOR OUR SCHOOL DIVISION IN SO MANY WAYS.

AND I DO WANT TO FORMALLY CONGRATULATE MR. GEORGE KLE JR.

AND I REALLY HOPE THAT IT'S SOMETHING THAT DR. WRIGHT WILL CONTINUE AND MAKE IT REALLY AN ANNUAL TRIP FOR OUR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS AND OUR BOARD OF SUPERVISORS BECAUSE IT WAS REALLY A GREAT DAY FOR OUR TWO BOARDS TO GET TO GO AROUND TOGETHER TO EXPERIENCE THE SCHOOLS.

AND, UM, WE GOT TO SEE HOW EXCITED THE KIDS WERE TO SHOW US WHAT THEY WERE DOING IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. THE ADMINISTRATORS, I THINK, WERE NOT SUPER EXCITED TO BE GIVING US A TOUR, BUT THEY WERE WONDERFUL AND THEY PRETENDED TO LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT.

AND, UM, I JUST REALLY HOPE THAT WE DO THAT EACH YEAR BECAUSE I THINK IT REALLY GIVES EVERYBODY THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE WONDERFUL THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

AND IT JUST ALLOWS US TO HAVE THAT TIME TOGETHER, UM, IN A LITTLE BIT MORE CASUAL, UM, SETTING.

I ALSO WENT TO THE BLUE RIDGE TECH, UM, COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE.

I WANTED TO THANK THEM FOR PUTTING THAT TOGETHER FOR COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND JUST REALLY CONTINUING TO TRY TO REACH OUT AND FIND WHAT OTHER OPPORTUNITIES CAN WE HAVE FOR THOSE STUDENTS.

UM, WE'RE OUTGROWING THAT BUILDING, SO THEY ARE JUST USING ALL KINDS OF JUST NEW IDEAS TO SEE, OKAY, HOW CAN WE BRIDGE OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY AND GET OUR STUDENTS MORE OPPORTUNITIES AND EVENTS LIKE THAT, REALLY BRING OUR COMMUNITY IN AGAIN TO SEE WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND TRY TO GET THEM ALL INVOLVED.

I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO THE WARREN COUNTY EDUCATION ENDOWMENT, UM, DINNER.

AND I THINK THEY'LL BE PRESENTING AT A FUTURE MEETING WITH THEIR GRANTS, UM, THAT THEY'VE GIVEN OUT.

BUT I REALLY ENJOYED THAT NIGHT JUST, UM, HEARING HOW THAT WHOLE ENDOWMENT GOT STARTED JUST FROM A FEW MEMBERS IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO SAW A NEED IN WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAW A WAY THAT THEY COULD COME TOGETHER AND FORM THIS GROUP WITH A COMMON GOAL TO RAISE MONEY AND FILL IN GAPS FOR OUR EDUCATORS WHO HAVE A GREAT NEW IDEA.

BUT THERE'S, THERE'S NOT ALWAYS FUNDS.

THERE'S OFTEN NOT FUNDS IN THE BUDGET FOR A GREAT NEW IDEA THAT I JUST WANNA TRY.

AND SO THAT ENDOWMENT MONEY GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX AND BRING OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR STUDENTS THAT THEY WOULDN'T OTHERWISE HAVE.

AND SO THAT'S, THAT IS A GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE AND AGAIN, JUST SHOWS WHAT OUR COMMUNITY CAN DO.

UM, I, AGAIN, WELCOMING DR. WRIGHT.

I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH.

THIS WAS ACTUALLY MY, UM, SECOND SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH THAT I WAS A PART OF.

THE MOU WILL STRENGTHEN WARREN COUNTY'S COMPLIANCE WITH THE FEDERAL AND STATE SPECIAL EDUCATION MANDATES.

IT WILL ENSURE EFFICIENT, EQUITABLE, AND INCLUSIVE EARLY INTERVENTION SERVICES FOR FAMILIES AND REINFORCES THE DIVISION'S COMMITMENT TO EARLY IDENTIFICATION AND SUPPORT.

OUR CALENDAR COMMITTEE WAS COMPOSED OF A REPRESENTATIVE FROM EACH SCHOOL, ALSO FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE.

AND I WILL TELL YOU THIS, AN OUTSTANDING COMMITTEE, BUT THEY ALSO, IT WAS, IT WAS A VERY, I'M GOING BACK TO OLD SCHOOL, A ROCK AND SOCCER LITTLE GAME THAT USED TO PLAY THAT.

YOU PRESS THE BUTTONS UP AND DOWN AND GO BACK.

WE DID A LOT, A LITTLE BIT OF ROCKING SOCK EM TO TRY TO WORK THROUGH ALL OF THE CHALLENGES THAT WERE THERE.

THIS COMMITTEE, THE PREMISE THAT WE STARTED FOR THE CALENDAR COMMITTEE WAS THAT OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE WAS OUR STUDENTS.

OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE IS WHAT CAN WE DO TO INCREASE INSTRUCTION AND GIVE OUR STUDENTS THE, OUR STUDENTS THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO BE SUCCESSFUL? AND ALSO, WE WERE ENCOURAGED AND CHALLENGED WITH BUYER, UM, ACTING SUPERINTENDENT TO MAKE SURE WE HAD 180 DAYS.

AND SO WITH THAT, WE DID OUR DUE DILIGENCE.

UM, THE COMMITTEE, ACTUALLY, WE HAD FIVE MEETINGS.

THE COMMITTEE, UM, TOOK INFORMATION, SHARED INFORMATION, WORKED WITH ONE ANOTHER, THEN THEY WENT BACK TO THEIR SCHOOLS, SHARED THAT INFORMATION AND WAS GATHERED.

THEY COLLECTED THE, FROM THE SURVEYS OF THE TEACHERS AND STAFF THERE, BOUGHT THAT INFORMATION BACK.

AND WE DID OUR BEST TO PUT TOGETHER THIS CALENDAR.

I KNOW IT'S JUST THE FIRST READING.

NOW, I WILL TELL YOU, EVERYBODY WANTS TO START SCHOOL LATER.

THEY WANT TO GET OUT EARLIER AND THEY WANT TO HAVE TWO TO THREE WEEKS AT CHRISTMAS, AND THEY WANT TO HAVE TWO TO THREE WEEKS AT THANKSGIVING.

UM, AND WE ALL DO, YOU KNOW, AND THAT, THAT WOULD BE A GREAT AND WONDERFUL THING.

BUT TO MAKE SURE WE GET OUR, OUR 180 DAYS IN AND TO BE PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE WINTER WEATHER, WE HAD TO, UM, WE HAD TO MAKE SOME CONCESSIONS.

WE DID LIST SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS AUGUST THE 12TH, AND IT GOES TO THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL IS MAY 27TH.

UM, THERE IS SOME DIFFERENCES.

I WILL TELL YOU ONE OF THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCES OF DISCUSSION.

THANKSGIVING THIS YEAR.

THERE ARE FIVE DAYS FOR THANKSGIVING NEXT YEAR ON THE CALENDAR.

THERE'S ONLY THREE DAYS.

UM, THAT WAS A BIG TOPIC OF DISCUSSION.

ANOTHER TOPIC OF DISCUSSION WAS THE, UM, SEPTEMBER, UM, THE LABOR DAY.

AND, UM, WE HAD A DISCUSSION OF THE KING'S DOMINION LAW, IF YOU'VE HEARD OF IT, CALLED THAT WAY, WHERE THE STUDENTS WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE FRIDAY BEFORE, UM, LABOR DAY OFF, IF WE STARTED SCHOOL FOUR DAY, 14 DAYS EARLIER.

WELL, THAT LAW HAS KIND OF CHANGED SINCE THEN.

UM, BACK IN 2011, 2012, WARREN COUNTY DID RECEIVE A WAIVER, AND FROM THAT WAIVER, WE ARE ALLOWED TO START MORE THAN 14 DAYS BEFORE, AND THE STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE THAT DAY OFF.

SO WE DID CHECK INTO THAT TO MAKE SURE WE WERE OKAY.

UM, WE TRIED TO MAKE SURE WE HAD ENOUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS.

UM, AND THE COMMITTEE, THEY'RE JUST GREAT.

THEY WERE, THEY WERE WONDERFUL TEACHERS AND EDUCATORS TRYING TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR OUR KIDS.

SO THAT'S OUR FIRST READING.

TO TALK TO THE PRINCIPALS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GET IN A PROCEDURE TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS KNOW HOW TO TURN IN HARD TRAYS THESE DAYS.

UM, 'CAUSE WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO, UM, THE OLD SCHOOL FOR ME, MAYBE NOT FOR YOU ALL, BUT I REMEMBER GONNA SCHOOL, WE HAD THE HARD TRAYS AND WE ACTUALLY HAD METAL FORKS AND THEY HAVE TO BE PUT IN A CERTAIN AREA AND THEY HAVE TO BE WASHED AND REUSED.

AND THAT'S BECAUSE IT IS, UM, IT, IT HAS GOTTEN SO EXPENSIVE SINCE THE STYROFOAM VAN HAS GONE INTO PLACE NOW FOR THIS TO HAPPEN.

IF THE BOARD APPROVES THIS PURCHASE, IT WILL TAKE A WHILE FOR US TO GET THE EQUIPMENT IN.

AND THEN IT POSSIBLY LOOKING AT OVER THE SUMMER, ACTUALLY HAVING THIS INSTALLATION TAKE PLACE BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE OPERATION, BUT, UM, THAT THIS WAS, WE DID PUT IT OUT.

THE, THE REASON I DIDN'T VOTE FOR THE CENSURE IS WE DON'T HAVE A POLICY ABOUT C I'M OKAY WITH CREATING A POLICY OF HOW TO DO IT BECAUSE THAT'S, IT'S AN OKAY THING TO DO, BUT WE DON'T CURRENTLY HAVE ANYTHING IN OUR, IN OUR, UH, POLICY MANNER THAT ALLOWS US TO DO THAT OR SAYS HOW TO DO IT.

SO I DO THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A LOT OF INFORMATION, UM, IN GREAT DETAIL ABOUT WHETHER IT'S THESE 22 ITEMS OR, OR DIFFERENT ONES, BUT IT SHOULD BE SO THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT IT IS BECAUSE SOME OF THESE CAN BE MISINTERPRETED DEPENDING WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO DO.

SO I THINK HAVING INFORMATION ABOUT HOW WE COMMUNICATE WHAT OUR ROLES AS A BOARD MEMBERS AND OBVIOUSLY HAVE TWO NEW PEOPLE COMING ON, PEOPLE COME AND GO FROM THE BOARD.

THERE SHOULDN'T BE AN ASSUMPTION THAT WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING WHEN WE FIRST COME ON.

AND THERE'S NOT A LOT ABOUT OUR GOVERNANCE.

SO, UH, DOWN IN STAFFORD COUNTY, THEY HAVE A HANDBOOK FOR EMPLOYEES AND BOARD MEMBERS.

THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT OPTIONS OUT THERE TO BE ABLE TO, NOT RESTRAIN US, BUT JUST TO EDUCATE US AS TO WHAT WE'RE SUPPOSED TO DO AND TO HOLD US ACCOUNTABLE SO WE KNOW WHAT IT IS.

I KNOW ON THE SAME POINT, WE'RE TRYING TO CREATE A, A, A BETTER CODE OF CONDUCT FOR OUR EMPLOYEES AS WELL.

IT'S BETTER NOT TO HAVE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHAT WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING OR NOT DOING.
