GOOD EVENING.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHT TONIGHT FEATURES MRS. ERT AND HER SECOND GRADE STUDENTS FROM E WILSON MORRISON SHARING THEIR EXPERIENCE, LEARNING ABOUT, AND WITNESSING FIRSTHAND THE LIFECYCLE OF CHICKS.

WCPS PARTNERED WITH THE LOCAL VIRGINIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION OF THE FOUR H TO PROVIDE ALL SECOND GRADE CLASSROOMS WITH AN ENGAGING HANDS-ON INTRODUCTION TO EMBRYOLOGY.

STUDENTS WERE INTRODUCED TO THE LIFECYCLE OF A CHICK AND EXPLORED HOW AND WHY CHANGES OCCUR AS THE EMBRYO DEVELOPS, THE STUDENTS FOLLOWED THE EMBRYO'S JOURNEY THROUGH THE FINAL HATCHING OF THE EGGS AND THE FIRST WEEKS OF THE CHICK'S LIFE.

AND AS OF TODAY, THERE WERE 45 45 SECOND GRADERS.

SO WE'VE, WE HAVE HATCHED 45 EGGS ACROSS THE SECOND GRADE HERE IN WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND WE HAVE FIVE OF OUR FRIENDS JOINING US TONIGHT.

IN ADDITION TO OUR SECOND GRADERS.

AND MRS. ERNST AND MRS. KNOX WILL, UH, COME UP AND SAY A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PROJECT IN THE CLASSROOM AT E WILSON.

GOOD EVENING, SUPERINTENDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS.

IT IS MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE MRS. ERNST AND HER STUDENTS WHO ARE HERE TONIGHT TO SHARE AN EXCITING AND HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE FROM THEIR CLASSROOM.

MRS. ER'S CLASS RECENTLY ENGAGED IN A STUDY OF CHICKEN EMBRYOLOGY WHERE STUDENTS EXPLORED THE LIFECYCLE THROUGH DIRECT OBSERVATION AND INQUIRY.

THEY BEGAN BY CAREFULLY INCUBATING FERTILIZED CHICKEN EGGS, AND OVER TIME MONITORED AND DOCUMENTED THE DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESS.

THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE, STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO WITNESS FIRSTHAND HOW THE EGGS DEVELOPED INTO BABY CHICKS.

THIS PROJECT PROVIDED A MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO CONNECT SCIENCE CONCEPTS TO REAL WORLD EXPERIENCES WHILE BUILDING CURIOSITY, RESPONSIBILITY, AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE SCIENCE.

AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE MRS. ERNST AND HER STUDENTS TO SHARE MORE ABOUT THEIR LEARNING.

HELLO.

UM, SO WE ARE HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT EMBRYOLOGY IN THE EMBRYO.

AND THEN EMBRYOLOGY IS JUST A BRANCH OF BIOLOGY THAT FOCUSES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EMBRYO.

AND AN EMBRYO IS THE VERY BEGINNING OF AN ANIMAL, LOST PART OF THE MOTHER OR THE EGG.

ALRIGHT, SO I'M GONNA INTRODUCE CHASE TO GO AHEAD AND START US OFF.

WE PUT OUR INCUBATOR ON A TABLE NEAR A WINDOW.

THE BLINDS WERE CLOSED.

WE KEPT THE TEMPERATURE 100 DEGREES AND THE HUMIDITY AT 55%.

WE'LL PASS IT ON TO CADE.

THE EGGS ROTATED ALL BY THEMSELF IN THE INCUBATOR.

WE TOOK THEM DOWN ON 18 SO THEY COULD ACT SAFELY.

AND NOW KIMBER, THE FIRST PART OF THE CHICKEN LIFECYCLE, IT'S THE EGG AND THE EMBRYO.

THE SECOND PART OF A CHICKEN'S LIFECYCLE IS WHEN THE CHICKENS HATCH.

AND NEXT TAYLOR, WHEN THEY HATCH, THEY

HAVE DOWN FEATHERS AND NEED A BROODER BOX.

A BROODER BOX IS WHERE CHICKS STAY TO STAY SAFE.

IT PROVIDES HEAT WHILE THE CHICKS GROW THEIR FEATHERS.

AND NEXT WE HAVE MEREDITH.

THE CHICKENS WILL THEN BECOME ADULTS.

A FEMALE CHICKEN IS A HE AND A MALE CHICKEN IS A ROOSTER.

ACTUALLY, THE BACK PART, LET'S SHOW.

UH, I WAS RECENTLY ABLE TO WITNESS, UH, A WARREN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AT THEIR AWARDS NIGHT.

TEGAN MILISH, TEGAN MILIT, I HOPE I GOT THAT RIGHT.

RECEIVE OVER A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS IN TEACHING FELLOW SCHOLARSHIP AND RETURN FOR TEACHING FOR TWO YEARS BACK AT HER HOMETOWN IN WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ONCE SHE GRADUATES FROM JAMES MONROE UNIVERSITY.

THIS IS A PROGRAM WE NOW HAVE TWO STUDENTS ENROLLED TO THAT.

ONE IS A SOPHOMORE, AND THEN TEGAN IS A, UH, WILL BE A FRESHMAN, UM, AT JMU.

AND WE HOPE TO CONTINUE THIS, THIS PIPELINE AND THIS, UH, PROGRAM WITH, UH, WITH JMU.

BUT, UH, CONGRATULATIONS TO TEGAN AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING, WELCOMING, WELCOMING HER BACK, UH, WHEN SHE GRADUATES AS A COLLEAGUE.

UM, UH, RECENTLY SAW, I JUST WANTED TO SHOUT OUT TO MR. BRETT MI, WHO IS A PE TEACHER AT RUSTY JEFFRIES.

UH, HE WAS RECOGNIZED, UH, BY THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION, UH, FOR RECENTLY COMPLETING THEIR FIRST MILESTONE, MILESTONE TOWARD AMERICAN HEART.

SO, UH, THE AMERICAN HEART US GAME.

SO I APPRECIATE, UH, MR. METCALF AND, UH, HIS PARTNERSHIP.

UH, AND JUST WANTED TO RECOGNIZING HIM FOR THAT, UH, CELEBRATION.

UH, AS WE WERE ABLE TO COVER, UH, THE HEALTH INSURANCE INCREASE AND STILL PROVIDE A RAISE AND STEP FOR OUR EMPLOYEES.

I KNOW WHEN WE SAW THE HEALTH INSURANCE COME IN, I THINK WE ALL PANICKED AND, UH, UH, WE JUST APPRECIATE THE COOPERATION OF OUR, OF OUR SUPERVISORS, UH, AND WORKING THROUGH THAT PROCESS.

UH, AND I THINK WE CAME OUT VERY IN A VERY GOOD, IN VERY GOOD SHAPE FOR OUR SCHOOL DIVISION.

UM, I WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT WE DO HAVE, UM, ENGLISH LANGUAGE FAMILY ENGAGEMENT NIGHT COMING UP TOMORROW EVENING, MAY 7TH AT ELEMENT AT HILDE J UH, THIS IS AT 5:30 PM AND IT'S FOR ELEMENTARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

IT WILL BE A CAMPING THEME, UH, WHERE EACH FAMILY GETS A, A BLUEY BOOK.

SO BRING YOUR, BRING YOUR FAMILY AND THEY'LL BE MAKING SOME MORE FOR EVERYONE.

SO IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE A LOT OF FUN.

UH, AS WE, UH, AS DR.

COSTNER WILL PRESENT OUR RECENT POLICY UPDATES THIS EVENING, YOU'LL NOTICE THAT THERE IS A NUMBERING SYSTEM.

UM, SO WE'RE CURRENTLY IN A UNIQUE SITUATION WHERE WE HAVE, UM, POLICY SERVICES BEING PROVIDED BY SBA, UM, BY THE SBA PROGRAM, UM, AND ALSO BY SBA ASSOCIATION, WHICH IS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER ALLIANCE.

AND THEN WE HAVE VSBA POLICIES, UH, CURRENTLY FOR THE MAJORITY OF OUR HANDBOOK.

AND WE'VE BEEN GETTING THOSE REFRESHED OR RENEWED, UH, FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW BY SBMA.

HOWEVER, SBMA HAS CHANGED THEIR NUMBERING SYSTEM, SO WE DON'T KNOW WHY THEY'VE DONE THAT.

BUT THAT HAS CREATED A SITUATION THAT WILL, UM, MAKE OUR POLICY HANDBOOK HALF LETTERS.

AND THE OTHER HALF THE NEW ONES WILL BE NUMBERS, WHICH IS GONNA BE A COMPLEX SITUATION WHEN IT COMES TO REFERRING AND REFERENCING OUR POLICY MANUAL, WHICH WE DO ON A REGULAR BASIS.

I KNOW A BOARD DOES AS WELL, AND I PROBABLY REFERENCE A POLICY MANUAL, UH, 20 TIMES A DAY EASILY.

SO I THINK THAT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT AND CONSIDER.

MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE AT A FUTURE MEETING THAT THE BOARD CONSIDER RETURNING TO VSBA FOR POLICY SERVICES ONLY, UH, AND CONTINUING TO KEEP S-B-A-S-B-M-A INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIPS FOR BOARD MEMBERS WHO WANT TO HAVE THAT, THAT WOULD OPEN UP, UM, CONSISTENCY, UH, THROUGHOUT THE POLICY MANUAL PROCESS.

SO, UM, WE DO HAVE THAT COMING UP.

I TALKED TO MR. VALENTINE.

HE SAID THAT THE BILL FOR POLICY SERVICES, UH, IS EXPIRING AT THE END OF MAY.

DOESN'T MEAN WE HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION BEFORE THE END OF MAY, BUT WE PROBABLY WANT TO VISIT THAT AND, AND SOMETIME IN A JUNE MEETING IF THAT'S SOMETHING THE BOARD WANTS TO DO.

SO THAT'S MY FINAL COMMENT FOR THE EVENING.

AND I KNOW IT'S SOMEWHAT CONTROVERSIAL, BUT IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE CONTROVERSIAL.

IT'S JUST MEANT TO BE WHAT'S PRACTICAL RIGHT NOW.

MEMBER REPORTS THIS EVENING, MS. SALEMS. UM, FIRST I WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF FOR TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK.

UM, I ATTENDED THE TEACHER AND SUPPORT STAFF AT THE YEAR BANQUET AS ALL OF US DID.

ALSO ATTENDED THE RETIREMENT DINNER.

AND WE HAD THE, UM, BUILDING COMMITTEE MEETING AS WELL SINCE OUR LAST, UH, PUBLIC MEETING.

UM, AND ADDRESSED THE, THE ONGOING ISSUE WITH OUR ROOFS AND THE, UM, CONTINUING TO BE IN LIMBO WITH THE MEALS TAX MONEY, UM, THAT WE ARE IN ARREARS MULTIPLE YEARS FOR, I I ESTIMATE WE, WE'VE LOST PROBABLY ABOUT EIGHT TO $10 MILLION FROM NON-PAYMENT OF THE MEALS TAX MONEY, WHICH IS IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF BOTH COUNTY ORDINANCE AND THE REFERENDUM VOTE OF 2003.

UM, MY, I'M, I'M TRYING TO BE PATIENT WAITING FOR THE SUPERVISORS TO AGREE TO PUT THAT ON AN AGENDA SO THAT THEY WILL VOTE ON IT.

MY PATIENCE IS RUNNING THIN.

UM, THE, AS FOR, I WOULD'VE PUT THIS IN THE REQUESTS SECTION, UH, FROM THE BOARD, BUT MY REQUEST WAS GOING TO BE THAT WE RENEW OUR POLICY SERVICES WITH THE SVMA BECAUSE THEIR, THEIR POLICY WRITING ABILITIES ARE SO MUCH MORE IN LINE WITH THE VIEWPOINTS OF THIS COMMUNITY.

THEY'RE ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER.

UM, THE LETTERING NUMBERING SYSTEM IS, IS REALLY IRRELEVANT.

UM, IT'S AS SIMPLE AS JUST CONTINUING TO STAY ON A LETTERED SYSTEM.

WE HAVE NO REASON TO SWITCH OVER TO NUMBERS.

I KNOW WE HAD DISCUSSED THAT YEARS AGO WHEN WE WERE GONNA TAKE OUR POLICY SERVICES TO OUR

UM, QUITE FRANKLY, NUMBERING WOULD BE EASIER, BUT I UNDERSTAND WE ALSO HAVE AN ENTIRE POLICY BOOK THAT'S ALREADY IN LETTERS.

WE CAN EASILY JUST KEEP THE LETTERS AND CONTINUE TO GET THE NEW POLICIES WRITTEN AND CONTINUE TO USE THE LETTERING SYSTEM THERE.

THERE'S, THAT'S REALLY, IT SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE, BUT I DO AGREE THAT THAT NEEDS TO BE ON AN AGENDA SOON SO THAT WE COULD RENEW THOSE SERVICES AT A SIGNIFICANT DISCOUNT WITH THE SDMA.

UM, FIRST OF ALL, I'M THANKFUL TO MAYOR LORI COCKWELL IN THE TOWN OF FRONT WORLD FOR HOSTING THE KING AND QUEEN LAST WEEK.

THAT WAS PRETTY COOL, AND INVITING US SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS TO GO TO IT.

WE HAD SOME NICE, NICE AREAS TO BE WHERE WE COULD ACTUALLY MEET THE, MEET HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS.

SO I WANNA THANK THEM FOR THAT.

IT AS A GREAT JOB.

UM, I'VE BEEN DOING SOME TRAININGS WITH THE SBMA AS WELL OVER THE PAST MONTH.

I EARNED, UH, THREE MICRO-CREDENTIALS.

ONE WAS FOR FOCUSING ON STANDARD SEVEN, WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING SCHOOL BOARDS DO.

DON'T YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT THAT IS NOW? NO.

UM, FORENSIC AUDITS, WHAT BOARDS NEED TO KNOW.

AND THEN I JUST WATCHED THIS ONE TODAY CALLED HOW EFFECTIVE BOARD MEMBERS PERSUADE WITHOUT EMOTION JILL.

ANYWAY, SO THOSE ARE, THOSE ARE THE SPMA PROVIDES SOME GREAT SERVICES TO BE ABLE TO GO DO 30 MINUTE, 45 MINUTE, UH, TRAININGS.

UM, I MENTIONED THIS BRIEFLY IN OUR LAST SPECIAL BUDGET MEETING, BUT SINCE IT'S, UH, THE OFFICIAL REPORT TIME, I JUST WANT TO UPDATE ON THE APRIL 27TH BOARD MEETING BETWEEN OR NON-BOARD MEETING, BUT A MEETING BETWEEN DR.

PENCE AND MYSELF AND THEN THE BOARD CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND THEIR, AND THEIR, UH, VICE CHAIR.

IT WAS TALK TO TALK ABOUT THE THREE MOUS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE THAT WE'D LIKE TO GET VOTED ON.

WE VOTED ON AND APPROVE THEM ALL.

AND IT SEEMS LIKE THE ONE THAT SEEMS TO BE CAUSING THE BIGGEST TROUBLE IS THE MEALS TAX.

THE OTHER TWO, EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE ON BOARD WITH THAT.

UH, PART OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE MEALS TAX IS WE WERE TOLD THAT, UH, WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING A HUNDRED PERCENT OF THE MEALS TAXES VOTED ON BY THE VOTERS IN 2003.

AND FOR THE PAST FOUR OR FIVE YEARS, I THINK WE LEARNED, WE HAVEN'T BEEN GETTING ANY OF IT, ZERO OF IT.

SO NOT ONLY ARE WE NOT GETTING 70% OR 30%, WE'RE GETTING ZERO.

SO ONE OF THE GOALS IS TO TRY TO GET BACK TO A HUNDRED PERCENT, BUT WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE'S A, SOMETHING GOING ON WITH THE TOWN COUNCIL.

THE TOWN IS LOOKING TO ASK FOR 50% INSTEAD OF THEIR NORMAL 30%.

THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT NUMBERS OUT THERE, BUT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, WE, WE THEN WE THEN GET ANOTHER EMAIL FROM THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR SAYING, NO, NO, YOU'RE GETTING THE A HUNDRED PERCENT.

SO RIGHT NOW, AGAIN, AS MS. SALEM MENTIONED, WE'RE IN LIMBO ON THE WHOLE THING, BUT IT'S A LOT OF MONEY THAT WOULD VERY MUCH HELP US IN OUR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT.

'CAUSE THAT'S, THAT'S THE WHOLE GOAL OF IT, TO BE PART OF THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT.

SO HOPEFULLY, HOPEFULLY, HOPEFULLY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS VOTES ON THIS SOON.

UM, I ALSO ATTENDED A TEACHER OF THE YEAR DINNER LAST WEEK AND THE RETIREMENT DINNER LAST NIGHT.

IT'S REALLY A GREAT PLACE TO SEE, SEE THE, UH, THE WORDS OF, I MEAN, I DON'T, AS YOU KNOW, I DON'T, I'M NOT THAT FAMILIAR WITH ALL THE TEACHERS AND THE PEOPLE THAT WORK IN THE, IN THIS DIVISION, BUT IT'S JUST SO GREAT TO SEE IT THROUGH THE EYES OF THE OTHER PEOPLE WHO'VE WORKED WITH ALL THESE FOLKS AND THE DEDICATION THAT THEY HAVE AND THE COMMITMENT LEVELS.

I THINK LORI COCKRELL WAS RETIRING LAST NIGHT WITH, I THINK SHE SAID 37 OR 39 YEARS.

THAT'S A LOT OF YEARS .

SO, AND SHE'S, ANYWAY, THAT'S, IT'S JUST AN AMAZING THING.

UM, AS A TEACHER MYSELF, UH, AND A SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR AND FORMER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, I WANT TO EXTEND MY HEARTFELT THANKS TO ALL OF OUR TEACHERS IN WARREN COUNTY.

AND I'D LIKE TO TAKE THE TIME TO READ INTO THE RECORD A LETTER OF, TO THE EDITOR I WROTE FOR THE ROYAL EXAMINER.

IT'S A LITTLE BIT LONG, BUT, YOU KNOW, I TOOK SOME TIME WRITING IT.

AND AGAIN, I JUST WANNA MAKE SURE EVERYONE HEARS ABOUT IT.

UM, IT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW.

I ACTUALLY, I TEACH ALL THE STUDENTS AT CHRISTENING COLLEGE EVERY YEAR, SO I'M STILL A TEACHER IN WHAT I DO.

AND I WAS A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL FOR, FOR A COUPLE YEARS, OR FOR ONE YEAR, AND A SCHOOL TEACHER FOR FULL TIME FOR THREE YEARS.

SO I, I'VE BEEN IN THE TRENCHES WITH THAT.

UM, THIS WEEK IS TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK ACROSS THE NATION WITH TUESDAY MAY 5TH, RECOGNIZED AS NATIONAL TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY.

AS VICE CHAIR OF THE WARRING COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD.

I WANT TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK ALL THOSE WHO SERVE AS TEACHERS IN OUR COUNTY, PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS, PRIVATE SCHOOL TEACHERS, AND HOMESCHOOL TEACHERS AND TUTORS ALIKE.

THE CHILDREN OF THIS GREAT NATION ARE OUR FUTURE.

AND WITHOUT COMMITTED, CARING AND SELF-GIVING TEACHERS, THAT FUTURE WOULD BE FAR LESS BRIGHT.

AS THE FATHER OF 11 HOMESCHOOL CHILDREN, I SEE FIRSTHAND THE SACRIFICE MY WIFE MAKES EACH DAY AS SHE WORKS TO PREPARE OUR CHILDREN INTELLECTUALLY, SOCIALLY, MORALLY, RELIGIOUSLY, AND CULTURALLY.

I EXTEND MY DEEP GRATITUDE TO HER AND TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE CHOSEN HOMESCHOOLING AS THEIR EDUCATIONAL PATH TO THE MANY TEACHERS SERVING IN OUR PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA, INCLUDING MY COLLEAGUES AT CHRIST COLLEGE.

UM, THEY WERE BOTH GREAT EVENTS, SO I WANNA SAY THANK YOU TO BOTH OF THOSE BAND DIRECTORS FOR ALL THE WORK THAT THEY DO, UM, EVERY DAY TO TEACH THESE STUDENTS, UM, ABOUT MUSIC.

AND, UM, THOSE, THOSE PROGRAMS ARE SUPER IMPORTANT TO ME.

UM, I ALSO ATTENDED THE TEACHER OF THE YEAR DINNER AND THE RETIREMENT DINNER, UM, AND GOING ALONG WITH TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK, I JUST WANNA THANK ALL OF OUR TEACHERS FOR COMING IN EVERY DAY, SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS, AND DOING A JOB THAT CANNOT BE MEASURED.

I KNOW WE HAVE SOME MORE AWARDS, UM, BANQUETS COMING UP TOMORROW NIGHT FOR THE FFA MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND THEN THE BLUE RIDGE TECH AWARDS AS WELL.

SO, UM, JUST CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE, ALL THOSE STUDENTS.

UM, I ALSO, UM, THROUGH SCHOLARSHIP NIGHTS, I ALWAYS TALK ABOUT ALL THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT THAT WE GET, AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY EVIDENT IN OUR SCHOLARSHIP NIGHTS WITH ALL OF, ALL OF THE MONEY THAT WAS HANDED OUT TO OUR GRADUATING SENIORS.

I THINK WE MADE A LOT OF REALLY GOOD STRIDES WITH OUR COMMUNICATIONS LEADING UP TO, UM, KIND OF OUR FINAL, OUR FINAL STEPS.

I REALLY ENJOYED THE, THE JOINT SESSIONS THAT WE DID WITH THE SUPERVISORS LEADING UP TO THAT.

I THINK MAYBE WE COULD DO A COUPLE OF TWEAKS THERE AT THE END, UM, FOR NEXT YEAR.

BUT JUST ALL IN ALL, I THINK OUR BOARD REALLY WORKED TOGETHER.

AND THEN LAST, LAST WEEK WHEN WE MET AGAIN TO DO, UM, OUR, OUR NEXT FINAL ADOPTION.

STILL HOPING THAT ALL THE STATE MONEY COMES THROUGH, LIKE WE HOPE.

BUT, UM, I THINK THAT EVERYONE REALLY PUT TOGETHER NUMBERS THAT, UM, YES, WE DIDN'T GET, WE DIDN'T GET AS MUCH AS WE WANTED, BUT HOPEFULLY WE'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO DO A LOT OF REALLY GREAT THINGS IN THE UPCOMING YEAR.

UM, I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND EITHER GRADUATION, IT HAPPENS THIS YEAR WHILE WE'RE ON VACATION.

SO THAT'S BEEN, UM, REALLY FUN SEEING KIND OF THE INSIDES OF JUST HOW MUCH SUPPORT OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GET AS WELL, UM, JUST KIND OF IN DIFFERENT WAYS.

AND THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE HAVE, UM, THE PIKE KIDS FOUNDATION WILL BE DOING THEIR SECOND ANNUAL DUELING DISCOS EVENT ON JUNE 27TH.

AND FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW, UM, HI KIDS DOES A LOT TO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS.

THEY SUPPORT OUR MCKINNEY-VENTO STUDENTS.

THEY DO CLOTHE THE KIDS.

THEY FILL IN A LOT OF GAPS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WITH STUDENTS THAT ARE IN NEED.

BUT WHY I'M TALKING ABOUT THIS, THIS EVENING IS BECAUSE DR. WRIGHT HAS AGREED TO BE ONE OF THE DUELING DISCO COMPETITORS, .

BECAUSE OUR, OUR JOB IS TO SET THE POLICY, AND WE DID TEND TO GET TRAMPLED BY THE, THE VSBA AND THEIR, THEIR VERY LIBERAL LEANINGS.

I MEAN, I, I KNOW DEALING WITH THEM, WITH THEIR, THEIR, UM, THEIR TRANSGENDER BATHROOM SITUATION WAS, WAS AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE.

WE WERE FLAT OUT, LIED TO ABOUT WHAT THE, WHAT THE LAW STATED.

I HAD TO DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE, UM, GRIM CASE AND READ IT COVER TO COVER AND GO TOE TO TOE WITH THEIR OWN ATTORNEY ABOUT WHAT WHAT WAS IN FACT SAID.

AND THAT'S WHY THEY OFFER THE TRAININGS.

THEY OFFER THE POLICY SERVICES AND THEY REALLY WANT TO ENCOURAGE US TO TAKE THIS ACTIVE ROLE.

I KNOW SINCE WE'VE MADE THIS SHIFT, UM, ONE OF THE GOOD THINGS THAT I THINK HAS COME OUT OF IT IS WE'RE NOT HANDED POLICIES THAT ARE KIND OF RAMMED DOWN OUR THROATS AND TOLD THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE, WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

THE TOTAL COST TO REPLACE, UM, BOTH ROOF SECTIONS IS $625,000.

THE PROCESS WAS LED BY A COMMITTEE OF TEACHERS, REPRESENTATIVE OF BOTH MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND ALSO INCLUDED ADMINISTRATORS FROM BOTH BUILDINGS AS WELL AS CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF.

THEY ATTENDED VEN VENDOR PRESENTATIONS AND ALSO HAD SOME OPPORTUNITIES TO PILOT, UH, RESOURCES FROM THE THREE COMPANIES THAT WERE CONSIDERED IN THEIR CLASSROOMS THIS SCHOOL YEAR.

UM, AFTER EVALUATING THE BOOKS USING A RUBRIC, THE TEACHERS OVERWHELMINGLY SELECTED MATH SPACE AS THEIR PREFERRED CHOICE.

THERE WAS ALSO A PARENT COMMITTEE THAT REVIEWED THE MATERIALS AND WORKING WITH, UH, DARCY CUP, OUR MATH CURRICULUM COORDINATOR.

THEY WENT THROUGH SOME MATERIALS AND ALSO USED A MORE PARENT FRIENDLY RUBRIC TO EVALUATE THE TEXTS AND ALSO CHOSE MATH SPACE AS THEIR TOP PICK.

UM, AS YOU ARE AWARE, AT THE END OF APRIL AND APRIL 20TH, WE ALSO SENT OUT AN EMAIL TO ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILIES THAT PROVIDED, UH, INFORMATION THAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH A TEXTBOOK, AN INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE REVIEW, AND IT HAD LIKE PARENT OVERVIEWS OF EACH OF THE THREE TEXTS THAT KIND OF GAVE A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THOSE, UM, MATERIALS THAT WERE OFFERED.

AND HAD THEY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME IN AND LOOK AT 'EM FURTHER IF THEY WOULD LIKE.

SO GIVING THE STRONG CONSENSUS THAT OUR EDUCATORS AND OUR PARENTS BOTH AGREE THAT MATH SPACE WOULD BE THE RECOMMENDED, UH, TECH TEXTBOOK FOR ADOPTION, STARTING WITH THE 26 27 SCHOOL YEAR.

AND I JUST WANT EVERYBODY TO KNOW THAT IT WAS DESPERATELY NEEDED ALONG WITH MORE, UM, THAT WE'RE NOT GETTING, CAN'T GET.

UM, AND I'M NOT GONNA SAY IT'S ANYBODY'S FAULT, UM, AT THE MOMENT, BUT, UM, I JUST WOULD LIKE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO, TO, AS HARD AS IT IS A NINE, 9%, YOU KNOW, A 9 CENT INCREASE IS A LOT.

BUT TO JUST UNDERSTAND, TO TRY TO KEEP A, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, A, A POSITIVE ATTITUDE THAT THE, THE MONEY'S GONNA BE WELL USED.

UM, OUR TEACHERS NEED IT, OUR STUDENTS NEED IT.

UM, UH, WE HAVE A, WE HAVE A LONG LOT, A LOT TO DO, UM, TO GET OUR, UM, BLUE RIDGE TACK UP TO UP TO SPEED, GET OUR FFA LAND LABS IN.

AND, UM, I JUST WANTED TO, UH, I WANTED TO SAY, SAY THIS.

I HAVE A, UM, I HAVE A VERY CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER THAT'S PRETTY HIGH UP IN ORACLE, UH, WORKS FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND TWO MONTHS, UH, INTO MY ANNOUNCEMENT THAT I WAS GONNA RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD.

HE HAD, UM, HE HAD CALLED ME AND SAID, UH, I WANT TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE INFORMATION.

AND THAT, THAT INFORMATION WAS THAT, UM, HE WANTED TO LET ME KNOW THAT WITHIN A YEAR, AI WOULD PROBABLY TAKE OVER.

AND FOR ME TO KEEP IN MIND THAT AI CAN'T NAIL SHINGLES ON THAT AI CAN'T FIX PLUMBING LEAKS AND THAT AI CAN'T BUILD HOUSES AND DO EXCAVATION WORK AND THAT IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, UH, THAT WE TRY TO PURSUE OUR, OUR, OUR TRADES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

AND, UM, I GOT A, I GOT A MESSAGE FROM HIM LAST WEEK AND, UH, HE, HE HAD TOLD ME TWO MONTHS PRIOR THAT IT WAS GONNA COST SOME TECH PEOPLE THEIR JOBS.

TWO WEEKS AGO, ORACLE LAID OFF 30,000 AND AI TOOK THEIR PLACE.

SO I REALLY WANT TO KEEP THAT IN MIND MOVING FORWARD, THAT I THINK IT'S A MORE OF A, IT'S MORE OF A NEED NOW THAN EVER.

UM, WE'VE REALLY GOTTA GET OUR, WE'VE GOTTA GET THE KIDS THAT WANT TO DO TRADES UP TO SPEED AND, AND GIVE THEM A, A, A, SOME VERSATILITY THAT THEY CAN GO OUT AND MAKE A, MAKE A GOOD LIVING.
